SchoolStep Power converts student footsteps on stairs into kinetic energy, powering vibrant, multi-coloured LED lights on the steps. This makes exercise fun and provides a visible, engaging lesson

SchoolStep Power is an innovative project that harnesses the energy of student movement right within the school building. By installing special pressure-sensitive plates on the main staircases, we capture the kinetic energy generated every time a student or teacher climbs or descends the stairs. This energy is then converted into electricity.

Our main goal is two-fold: to promote physical activity and to provide an interactive, visible lesson in sustainable energy. The generated power is used to light up the stair treads in a vibrant array of colors, making the stairs an engaging, dynamic feature. This visual feedback encourages young people to take the stairs more often, associating movement with immediate, colourful results.

The system is organized as a student-led initiative, with regular updates on the energy generated displayed publicly. We are partnering with local engineering experts for the installation and maintenance. SchoolStep Power is financed through a combination of a school fund for innovation and a "Step Challenge" fundraising event. The idea: turn everyday motion into fun, functional energy, fostering an environment of self-determination, health, and hands-on understanding of green technology.
